DNB Top Ten: Big Threes

Last week we took a look at the top ten point guards in the league and in this weeks installment, we'll be looking at the top Big Three's in the league. So here's the top ten 3 player combo's in the league.

1. Pierce, Garnett, Allen and Rondo, Celtics ( 62.6 PPG, 23 RPG, 22 APG)

Kind of had to cheat on this one because the Boston Big 3 just won't be the same without Rondo. When these guys are on the court together good things always happen on the defensive end, which usually results in great plays on the offensive end. With players like Shaq, Big Baby and Nate Robinson surrounding them and with the return of Kendrick Perkins in a few weeks, this trio is poised to lead the Celtics to the NBA Finals once again. That's if they can stay healthy.

2. Wade, Bosh and Lebron, Heat (69.3 PPG, 21.8 RPG, 13.3 APG)

After getting off to a very mediocre start in which many questioned whether they can co-exist and many trade rumors involving Bosh started, the South Beach trio has responded and shown just how good they can be, by going 15-1 in the month of December and winning 21 of 22 games. It looked like they were going to continue that trend into January. Not to mention that this trio currently has the highest +/- amongst 3-man combos with +290. Though they may lack the bench production and depth as the original Big 3 in Boston, each of these guys can take over a game at any point and led their team to victory, unless Lebron tweets about "karma" again.

3. Kobe, Gasol and Odom, Lakers (59.1 PPG, 25.3 RPG, 11.5 APG)

These guys have helped the Lakers win two consecutive NBA titles and it's been mostly due to these guys. With probably the best closer in the league in Kobe, a threat in the middle in Gasol, and an all-around big man who can handle the ball and spread the defense in Odom the Lakers, are gearing up for another shot at the NBA Finals and a chance to complete the 3-peat and the franchise's 17th title.

4. Parker, Manu and Ginobli, Spurs (50.1 PPG, 16.8 RPG, 14.6 APG)

The most experienced of the Big 3.s on this list. These guys have won three NBA titles together and currently looking for their 5th title in franchise history all of which have come after the 1999 season. With the best record in the league right now at, 35-6, the Spurs are looking in great shape to complete that goal and bring the championship parade back to San Antonio for the 4th time since 2003.

5. Rose, Boozer and Noah, Bulls (58.8 PPG, 26.5 RPG, 12.9 APG)

With the acquisition of Boozer last offseason, the Bulls have propelled themselves to title contenders status. With Rose running the offense and Boozer and Noah patrolling the paint, the Bulls will be a force to be reckoned with come playoffs time. Though the trio has only played 9 games together this season due to injuries to both Boozer and Noah, we haven't gotten a full glimpse of what they can do yet, but when that happens opposing teams should beware.

6. Durant, Westbrook and Green, Thunder (65.9 PPG, 16.8 RPG, 13.4 APG)

One of the best up and coming trios currently in the league. Coming off a great season last year, in which they put up quite a fight against the Lakers in the first round, these three are looking to lead the Thunder to a top 4 seed and get them past the first round. These guys may only be together for a few more months though, as the Thunder have yet to offer Jeff Green a contract extension, and may let him go as a free agent. Either way this is a trio worth watching even if it is for a few more months.

7. Kidd, Dirk and Terry, Mavericks (47 PPG, 13.9 RPG, 15.4 APG)

These three have been apart of many successful seasons with the Mavs, but have yet to win and NBA championship. The Mavs had a shot in 2006, without Kidd, but ended up losing to D-Wade and the Miami Heat in the Finals. With all three in their 30's and entering the final seasons of their careers, the window for them to win that title is slowly closing. If there was ever three players who can lead the Mavs to their first franchise title, it's the two Jason's and the German, but with that window closing will they be able to accomplish that or once again see another team walking away with the prize.

8. Williams, Millsap, Jefferson, Jazz (56.4 PPG, 20.4, 13.4 APG)

With Jerry Sloan's coaching the Jazz are once again poised for another 50 win season and a deep post-season run. After acquiring Jefferson, they now have a presence in the post alongside Millsap, who can scored, defend and grab rebounds. Add that to D-Will's ability to make plays and shoot the ball and you have a great inside-out game. Toss in Millsap's hustle, rebounding and clutch shooting and you have a dangerous trio. Not sure if they'll be able to win the title this season, but with these no still in their mid-20's and entering the prime of their careers, the Jazz may just win a title within the next 5 years.

9. Turkoglu, Howard, and Nelson, Magic (46.4 PPG, 20.8 RPG, 14.1 APG)

After about a season and a half apart, the Orlando trio has been reassembled once more and looking to make some noise in the Eastern conference. The last time these three were together they made in the the NBA Finals, though Jameer wasn't 100%, where they would ultimately lose to the Lakers. Now with a healthy Jameer, and a not so crappy Hedo along with the insode force that is Dwight Howard, the Magic are poised for a deep playoff run, but would the Celtics or Heat put an end to that run.

10. Stoudemire, Felton and Gallinari, Knicks (59.5 PPG, 17.3 RPG, 13.4 APG)

At this point last season the Knicks were already looking at who they'll select in the draft, but it's a totally different story this year. With the additions of Amare and Felton the Knicks have made themselves a playoff team once more. With Amare's relentlessly attacking the rim, Gallo hitting threes and Felton making plays the Knicks have become and exciting team to watch. Though they are a long shot away form being a title contender, mostly due to their lack of defense, they would remain a force in the East for years to come with their Big 3 and it's supporting cast.

Up and Coming:

Griffin, Gordon, and Davis, Clippers (57.2 PPG, 18.5 RPG, 15 APG)

After year's of being viewed as "That Other LA team" the Clippers are out to make themselves known with their trio of Baron Davis, Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon. With wins against the Heat, Spurs, Thunder, Bulls and Lakers ( all of which have Big 3's that appeared on this list) this season the Clippers have shown that they have a really bright future ahead of them and maybe their days of being an automatic lottery team may be over in the near future. Not sure how long Baron will remain there, but he can provide that veteran experience needed in clutch game situations.

A Home For Hump With The Nets?

Kris Humpries joins a growing list of former Raptors we have talked with. I have always thought it is something important to do when the opportunities come along to do so. He came to the Raptors in a trade for the poster boy of the Rob Babcock Era in Rafael Araujo. The fact Colangelo was able to trade Araujo for anything beyond some athletic supporters was amazing. If you think that is harsh by all means check out the stats from his 3 year NBA Career. It only took Utah a year to give up on him, it took Raptors two. Humphries meanwhile, entered the draft early from Minnesota. He was the freshman of the year in the Big 10 and decided to jump into the draft and was taken 14th by the Utah Jazz. Life under Jerry Sloan clearly was not working. So he was off to to Toronto. He was a pleasant surprise and turned some heads in the pre-season in 06-07 his first year as a Raptor. He always seemed to have potential to be more than he was with the Raptors. But he often seemed to forget he was not number 1 option on offence at times. His numbers would suggest his career has taken steps forward at each stop along the way.

In his words he says, "I came into the league and nothing was really easy for me." Humphries continues on to say "Everything has just been kind of a process, and I improve along the way." Which he has and no more so than in his most recent stop in New Jersey. He has started more games this season for the Nets with 21 than he had in his entire NBA Career prior to that with just 8 starts (2 with Raptors). He has taken advantage of the struggles of Favors the 3rd overall pick of the Nets who you would have thought would be starting for Jersey. Favors has not started a game and is scoring 6.5 points per game and has averaged 5.5 rebounds. In comparison Humphries has 7.9 points per game with 9.1 rebounds and is shooting 53.8%, which are all career highs if he keeps it up, at his current pace.

It really seems like Humphries has found a basketball home with the Nets. Humphries said "It feels like it, but in the NBA you never know what happens. We just had a couple players traded off our team" in reference to the trade with the Lakers and Rockets. Sasha Vujacic would be making his debut with the Nets that night at the ACC. Joe Smith and Terrence Williams were off to L.A and Houston as part of the 3 team deal. Humphries added, " The NBA is just a constant cycle," which for a guy that has played on 4 teams in his 7th year in the NBA seems a logical way to think. But you hope for his sake he might have found a place where he can stay awhile.

Part of that cycle he refers to applies to coaches as well. His head coach in Toronto is now his assistant coach in New Jersey in the form of Sam Mitchell. Hump had these thoughts on being reunited with Mitchell, "Sam is a real good coach and he is part of what were doing here." He continues on to say " He always keeps it interesting." Has Sam actually mellowed at all from his days with the Raptors? Hump says "How People see him now versus than is a little different. But it is a different role." He continues on talking about the differences in Sam, "It's interesting, it is probably different for him going from being the head coach to an assistant but he is doing a great job with it." Still there might be some of the old Sam left and he has not changed entirely. When asked if there were flashes of "the old" Sam, Hump said the following, " Every once in awhile something will happen and I wait to see if he is going say something. Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't, because he is an assistant now and has different responsibilities."

It sure seemed like the same Sam earlier in a scrum with the Toronto media with perhaps one large exception. Sam use to always refer to how easy the media had it in comparison to him. Some work with NBA-TV in his time away from coaching has changed his opinion. On his brief stint in the media he had this to say, " It was fun, it was different. There is a lot of work that goes into it. It is not just showing up doing it. There is a lot of research that goes into it so you actually know what you are talking about. Numbers and stuff." Mitchell continued to say "It gave me a different impression of little you guys really work." Which got a laugh from everyone. He mentioned that he liked everything except for the Friday night shifts at NBA T.V, where he would end up leaving somewhere around 3 am. See Sam Mitchell this is not so easy!!! But I truly miss Sam and I regret that I never got to cover the team in his time here. I miss my Sam Mitchell laugh of the day. Which happened almost everyday that he was coaching the Raptors.

When I asked about Kris Humphries time in Toronto and what he takes away from it? Hump looks back on it in a positive way. " We went to playoffs twice up here. Just winning games and I played with some great team mates." He continues on to say " I Really enjoyed some of the people on the staff. Obviously I think I got better as a player. It is part of my journey." It is strange to me how Toronto has such a bad wrap with folks in the U.S, but if you talk to the players that have been here it is rare they will have anything negative to say about Toronto. They can't all be lying can they? I never bothered to ask if he got NBA League Pass when he was here. I also didn't ask about the whole Kim Kardashian stuff. I don't know if I have developed any rules to doing interviews. But if there is one I try to follow, it is that I won't ask anything that I wouldn't answer myself. If someone asked me about who I am dating my answer would be none of your damn business. We are a basketball blog if you want that kind of thing go check out TMZ Sports or something. Unless it impacts on a player in a negative way, I could care less, even than I really wouldn't want to go there. But as was stated Humphries is currently having the best season of his NBA Career. If Kim Kardashain has a blessed thing to do with that I could not tell you. But if she does, good for Kris Humphries. I wanted to tell him this but chickened out. He was my mom's favourite Raptor, not for how he played, she just though he was cute and adorable. I am not sure if people banging on the glass against him would agree. Hump was part of our journey too as Raptor fans, and at least for me will stand out from the crowd.

V-Log- Post Game Thoughts On Raps and Jazz

I decided to take to the video today to provide my thoughts on the Raptors and Jazz. If you want a detailed recount of how it went down you can go check out the live blog from last night on The Score. Always enjoying doing the Raps games for The Score it is great to get a feel for what folks are thinking. Here is the boxscore in all it's awful glory. Now on to our feature presentation you know him, you hopefully love him...Me Aka James Borbath.



Why do the video? It is a nice change of pace. It beats having to write about that mess and re-live it in a longer way. Plus I am starting doing a regular bit on Raptorspace so I was already in that video mode. Also, you can all get to witness, my goatee turn grey from this season. A preview of the Lakers and Raptors tomorrow and I promise to try not use the number 81.

All That Jazz On Raps And Utah

Toronto Raptors continue their 4 game road trip tonight in Utah. The Raptors will face the new look Jazz who come into this one riding high.

The Basics : Utah 1-2 (Coming off double digit win over Thunder) Raptors 1-2 (9th in Points Allowed- 96.6 PPG)

Last Time We Saw Them: The Raptors stormed out of the gate at Arco vs Kings only to let their large first quarter lead slip away. Reggie Evans continued to impress on the glass with 19 rebounds. Demar DeRozan tied his career high in points with 24. Andrea Bargnani had 28 points in the loss. The Kings took the lead midway through the 4th Quarter and held on for the 111-108 win.

Key Match ups: The Raptors did not get great point guard play from Jarrett Jack and he will need to be better facing one of the NBA's best in Deron Williams. He was great in Utah's first win of the season over the Thunder with 16 points with 15 Assists. How the Raps play the pick and roll will determine their fate. It won't be Carlos Boozer on those pick and rolls anymore. Al Jefferson the former Celtic and Minnesota player fills his shoes. 3 games into his Jazz career he is averaging 16.3 points and 8.7 rebounds. Those rebounds will be hard to come by as he will be matched up with Reggie Evans. Thanks in large part to Evans the Raptors are actually in the top third of the league in rebounding. Evans also has been given credit for the Raptors improvement defensively as well according to Demar DeRozan in his post game comments after the Kings game.

Other Things To Note: Amir Johnson has struggled so far this season with just 4.7 points and 2.3 rebounds largely in part because he can not stay on the floor. He is averaging 4 fouls and as a result just 14.3 minutes of floor time. It has been a long time since the Raptors got a win in Salt Lake City. November 10th, 2004 was last time the Raptors won there. Chris Bosh led the Raptors with 20 and Vince Carter had 16. Yeah that was A LONG TIME AGO. In fact that pre-dates Deron Williams who has never lost to Toronto on his home floor. The Raptors next two opponents the Lakers and Blazers both won last night beating the Grizzlies and Bucks.

The Overtime Extra Point: If the expected happens in the next 2 games this will be an early test to this Raptor team's moral. A tough loss to the Kings now 2 games that are almost certainly losses will test this new found locker room chemistry. There are going to be losing streaks for this Raptors team and this will be an early test in how they deal with them.

Worst Birthday Party EVER

Chris Bosh turned 26 yesterday. The Utah Jazz crashed his party at the ACC and they trashed the place. In doing this I always try to be optimistic heading into any game the Raptors play. However at the same time I always have a realistic idea of what I expect. Heading into last night's game I expected the Jazz would win. The simple reason that the Jazz execute what they do on offense so well. A good defensive team is challenged to stop the Jazz. A bad defensive team can be taken apart. The Raptors clearly are that team and the Jazz went to work on them. Williams took a part Jose Calderon and proved once again why Jose Calderon is just one of the worse defenders starting at his position in the league. Deron Williams line was a thing of beauty with 18 points, 16 assists, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. He was just one of 7 Jazz players that got to double figures in terms of points.

Chris Bosh was left after this one begging for some help as he had 20 points and just 5 boards and did cut down on his turnovers with just 2. Hedo Turkoglu was not much help he only made an appearance in first half and left with a upset stomach. He had just 4 points prior to leaving. Bargnani did play the whole way but only had 12 points and 4 rebounds with a couple of blocks. Raptors with Bosh included in this got killed on the glass. it was 38-28 on the glass in favour of the Jazz including 14 on the offensive boards for Utah.

The Jazz got so many open looks it was embarrassing. The playoffs are about defense, rebounding and valuing every possession. The Raptors are doing none of that and are in serious jeopardy of not even making the playoffs. The Raptors are having to hope for help from others to handle their business. The Heat, who now sit a game and a half in front of the Raptors, tied with Bobcats for 6th take on the Bulls who are now just 2 games back of the Raps for the final playoff spot. Given the way things are going for the Raptors you have to hope the Heat get the win.

The Raptors play the Nuggets next and given this performance vs the Jazz, which ended in a 113-87 loss if you could not bear to watch the whole thing. Anyway it seems highly unlike to expect the Raptors some how pull it together enough to beat the Nuggets who are battling for 2nd in West with Mavs. This Raptors season will be defined by games Sunday and Monday on the road vs the Heat and Bobcats. If the Raptors walk away from those 2 road games without a win they can pretty much forget about 6th or 7th and will be hard pressed to hang on to 8th.

Regardless of how the regular season plays out the Raptors for yet another season, have fallen short of the expectations that people had for this team. There is lots of blame to go around for that but the ultimate price the Raptors could pay is losing Chris Bosh. If you listen to his comments of late he sounds like a guy that is just begging for someone to give him some reason to believe in this team. Bosh's personal performance has gone down but the play around him has dropped even further. In 7 years in Toronto the one thing that has remained constant in what Chris Bosh has said is that he wants to win. Looking around at the cast around him it is hard to point to anything that helps him do that going forward.

While this season on it's own is important the future of Chris Bosh is more important in the long run. If Chris Bosh joins that list that includes Damon Stoudamire, Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter and others that have left town it will be a crushing blow to this fan base. Sports is not as complex a business as it sometimes gets made out to be. It really comes down to this, if you can give fans a reason to have hope you generally will be successful as a franchise. There are exceptions to that rule in teams like the Leafs in NHL, Cubs in baseball that have fan bases that continue to support those teams despite very little signs of hope in their histories. But the Raptors with just a 15 year history do not have that kind of support behind them. Raptors fans have been incredibly loyal but Bosh should he leave would be a devastating blow to that fan base and to that hope. It sounds like a broken record at this point, but if the Raptors do not wake up and do it quickly, they are in danger of losing more than just another season of failing to meet expectations. They could lose much more.

Same Old Tune?

Remember how the Raptors had won 11 straight (Now 12 straight ) vs the T-Wolves. Well you can flip the script tonight. Raptors have lost 9 straight to the Jazz one of those 9 being Jay Triano's first game as Raptor head coach last year in Utah. They have lost 4 straight to the Jazz at the ACC where they will hook up tonight. In the 15 year history of the franchise they are a pathetic 7-20 all-time. These are all not good signs for the Raptors heading into this one. They also after a brief couple days tied for 7th in the East fall back to 8th courtesy of a Bobcats win over the Washington Bullets...oops Wizards.

DNB Scoreboard Watching

Those Bobcats take on Minny tonight as they sit a half game in front of the Raptors. They will be the gracious hosts in that one. Miami and Chicago both have the night off before facing each other tomorrow night. The Bucks who are likely out of range for any of these teams host the Sixers tonight.

Sloan Ranger

So as I mentioned in my V-Log yesterday there is no great secret to what the Jazz will do. Jerry Sloan has been doing it for like 20 years it is pick and roll offense run better than almost anyone in the NBA. Much like when you think the Triangle offense when you think Phil Jackson, for Sloan you think pick and roll. It is not unlike what goes on at Syracuse on the other end of the floor with their 2-3 zone defense. The names may change but the systems and coaches remain.

Jerry Sloan has never won the coach of the year as I also made mention of in that V-Log. But his reward or award is the fact he is the longest serving coach in North American Sports. In the 15 years the Raptors have been around they have had 7. Malone, Walker, Carter, Wilkens, O'Neil, Mitchell and Triano for those keeping score at home. Sloan was the coach when the Jazz played the Raptors for that 20-7 mark for the Jazz. There is something to be said for that. There is no question who is in charge in Utah it is Jerry Solan. No Raptor coach with the possible exception of Lenny Wilkens carried that kind of stroke. Wilkens was the all time leader in wins when he came to the Raptors. Although by the time he left you can argue he had very little stroke at all on the tail end of his coaching career. A brief stop with the Knicks after and his career was done.

The Road Ahead For Raptors

Given the low odds of a win tonight you tend to look ahead and you see the Nuggets at home and the 2 most important games of the Raptors season after that in Miami and Charlotte. It is hard to imagine the Raptors not heading into those games on a 2 game losing streak a game under .500. They will be must wins for the Raptors and will be vital to securing a better spot in the playoffs if not just making that playoffs altogether. Miami is 21-16 at home and Bobcats are 25-8 and had a big win over the Raptors on their home floor earlier in the season. Raptors road record is still pretty awful at 12-23.

Happy Birthday CB4

It is Chris Bosh's birthday number 26 for him. Raptor fans hope against hope it will not be last one he celebrates in Toronto. We will be having are own party at Brooklyn's for the Raptors and Jazz Game. We won't have any birthday cake but we will have Raptors Tickets for Raptors vs Warriors on April 4th. Along with some other goodies depending on how many folks come out. 291 Queenston road easy to get to off the Red Hill Creek Expressway here in Hamilton. Hope to see some of you in the house for the game tonight.

Live Blog- Raptors @ Jazz

Decided to live blog this one for the DNB. So will get started at about 8:45.

Hope Is Mile High

Suddenly I am a bit more hopeful about the rest of this road trip? How about you? Granted a back to back with Denver and Utah is still not an easy task. However if we see an effort like we did last night the Raps should be able to be in both games. The Nuggets after a fast start have come back to earth slightly. However the Nuggets are a perfect 3-0 on their home floor. While the Jazz after a bad start have been playing better of late. Even Deron Williams having to leave the team to deal with a family issue was not a problem as Eric Maynor filled in and played well. Williams left the Jazz to be with his family as his daughter was to under go some medical procedure according to a statement released by Williams. Obviously you hope everything goes well for Deron in regards to that situation.

The Raptors after 2 very inconsistent games in terms of defensive intensity brought it for the full 48 minutes against the Suns. The wins over the Bulls and the Clippers were nice to have in terms of getting the W in the standings. However the horrible starts followed by the amazing efforts to recover is no a recipe for success over the long term. The Raptors have shown that when they do put in the effort they can be an average to good defensive team. They need to bring that effort for the full 48 minutes and not flip it on and off like a light switch. The Nuggets and Jazz both should offer solid tests to how well they can defend. Carmelo Anthony like Chris Bosh has been off to a great start to the NBA season. There has even been some early M.V.P talk for the former Syracuse star. Since Chancey Billups arrived last season this has been a different team. He gives them solid leadership at the point guard position and really has done a great job pushing the Nuggets to the next level. A team that has some rather loud and odd characters has all rallied behind him and he has been able to lead them and help Carmelo Anthony reach is true potential. Something that did not happen with Allen Iverson . The Nuggets after a trip to the Conference Finals have started the season at a respectable 7-3.

There is also the reality of playing in that mile high air of Denver. It is always a tough place to play when you are not use to that. The Nuggets as a result enjoy one of the more unique home court advantages in the NBA. If the Raptors can fight through and put in a full 48 in Denver's thin air they can do it anywhere. Even Jose Calderon of late has shown signs of more effort and the Raps did a good job of making switches and keeping a body on a man. Granted sometimes in major mis-matches. But those are a two way street. A mis-match is only one if the player in it realizes that it is and takes advantage of it. There is also advantages for the other side of a mis-match as well. Every player in the NBA knows when they are open. Heck we all see it as well. That happened a few times with Frye and even a couple with Steve Nash. That being said those were few and far between in comparisons to earlier efforts on the season.

It was not all a bowl of cherries in that effort in Arizona. Jarrett Jack is still trying to find his way. I have just get the impression that Jack in some cases is just trying to hard. Point guard is the hardest position to play on a new team. You not only have to know what your job is but you pretty much need to know what everyone else has do as well. That is why you tend to hear things like the point guard is an extension of the coach on the floor. It is also why relationships with coaches and point guards tend to be one of the most important on any basketball team. So it will take time for Jack to build that relationship over time with both his coach and everyone on his team not named Chris Bosh. Jose Calderon has the same issues in terms of getting to know a lot of the roster but not all and he has know Jay Triano from the day he arrived in Toronto. When Jose struggled early on some fans were already willing to give Jack the starting job. That is something he is not ready for at this point. He has not played to a level to even consider it right now. It is not to say that day may never come, it is just to say I highly doubt it comes in November or even December.

When you talk point guard and coaching relationships one of the best teams at this is Utah. Jerry Sloan has his system and his point guard is going to play his system or he is not going to play. It is a rather one sided relationship in those terms but it works. But first thing is first as the Raps take on a Denver team feeling very good about itself coming off a win over the defending champion Lakers. They really put the boots to L.A while the Raptors were digging out of that whole they dug in L.A. No question beating the Lakers is far more impressive than beating the Clippers. The one thing you hope to start seeing for this Raptors team is a more consistent and balanced effort. It would be great to go into a game and have some idea of what you can expect for the Raptors. They need to build an identity for this team. Part of that will be a team that can score the basketball but it needs to include some elements of hustle and defense as well.

One final note before we call it a day. Happy for Sonny Weems getting some playing time last night. He really has done well for himself so far. Let's face it not to many people knew who Sonny Weems was when he came as part of the trade that brought Amir Johnson to town. Well now you know who he is and what he is all about. He can get up and make some pretty athletic plays not unlike what Demar DeRozan can do. The finish he had on that Alley Opp play last night was very hi-light worthy and he is proving himself worthy of chances at getting more chances to play. That is an added bonus that few people could have expected or hoped for. So keep pushing hard to get the PT Mr. Weems!!!
