Young Onez Spark A Rally And Roll On Thunder.

Kevin Durant spoke with media pre-game but he did not play tonight. Russell Westbrook looked to lead the Thunder tonight against the Raptors coming off a big win vs the Wizards. Westbrook has been big for the Thunder with Durant out. In his last 3 games he has averaged 28.6 points and 10 assists. Jose Calderon you might have expected to be in for a long night. But sometimes what we think doesn't always happen.

1st Quarter:

OKC got it going early with 2 scores in the paint and had a 4-0 lead to get this one under way. Bargnani would draw contact and get to the line making both to get the Raptors on the board. That sparked an 8-0 Raptor run that featured a couple jumpers from Jose and set up Demar for the slam dunk. I watched Demar warming up prior to the game and you could see him feeling more confident in his hamstring. He confirmed later in the locker room it was feeling much better and it had showed in this performance vs the Wizards and was again tonight early in this one.

After taking that 8-4 lead the Raptors would not trail for the rest of the quarter. It remained close throughout the first but the Raptors were doing enough to stay in front. The largest lead they would have was 6 with the score 16-10 after back to back Bargnani buckets. Calderon and Bargnani were leading the charge. After hooking up Demar for a dunk he would also find Amir Johnson for an Alley Opp slam. Andrea had 10 points and 3 rebounds in the Quarter in 9 minutes of action and Calderon in same amount of floor time had 4 points 4 assists and a steal. Westbrook had 4 points as well and 3 assists and 1 steal. Jose with a slight edge in point guard battle. James Harden seemed to give the Thunder a bit of a spark off the bench at the end of the Quarter.But at the end of the first it was Toronto with a 28-25 lead.

2nd Quarter

D.J White who is becoming one of the Thunder's key players off the bench was able to block Bargnani a couple of times near the beginning of the 2nd. White unfortunately for the Thunder would get injured later in the quarter. Unfortunate for the Raptors was they lost the lead on Collison tip in making it 34-32 Thunder. Another sign of trouble was James Harden. He ended up with 7 in the Quarter that included a 3-ball That made it 47-41 Thunder.

Long time Raptor Morris Peterson checked in to a nice ovation. He was another before the game I managed to talk with and he seems content in his roll mentoring the youngsters on this Thunder team. But he still loves Toronto and feeling is mutual. One of the good guys in Raptor history. Peterson had only played in two games for the Thunder and the last time was on November the 19th. Another game with no Durant in which the Thunder hung on to beat the Celtics. That was followed by these Raptors beating Boston as well on the Sunday. Shifting back to Peterson he had just played 7 minutes all season and had yet to record a point for his new team that acquired him in a draft day trade with New Orleans. It would not come till the 4th but Peterson would record some points. A classy move by Scott Brooks giving Mo-P some playing time in his former home of Toronto.

The Thunder would close the half strong getting the lead all the way to 9 but having to settle for a touchdown lead at the half leading 59-52. Westbrook had 10 points 5 assists and couple steals. While Bargnani after a strong first had just 1 point in the second quarter. But had 4 more redounds for a total of 7. Calderon had just 2 more points with 6 but he had 7 assists. Barbosa had 10 off the bench and Harden 11 for the Thunder. Game's high scorer was Jeff Green who had 13 points and just 1 rebound. That is a Bargnani line.

3rd Quarter

How many times can you remember the Raptors storming out of a half last season to take back control of a game? The answer is probably not that often. Keep in mind this was a Thunder team that needed 3 overtimes to knock off New Jersey. On the same night the Raptors were pounding the Wizards and could afford to rest there players. It was the Young Onez that came out of the locker room on fire. Demar, Sonny and Amir all contributed in turning a 7 point disadvantage into a 1 point advantage in under 3 minutes. It was capped off with a DeRozan alley opp pass with Weems on the finish. Raptors took a 64-63 and they would never trail the rest of the night as it turned out. The Raptors would build the advantage to as high as 11 points and would outscore the Thunder 34-18 in the Quarter and when the dust cleared the Raptors had a 86-77 lead to take to the 4th Quarter.

This was the best quarter of basketball as a collective group from the Young Onez in this entire season. The group accounted for 22 of the Raptors 34 in the Quarter.

4th Quarter.

The Raptors had no intention of letting the Thunder off the hook. OKC was also starting to slowly run out of gas in this game. The effects of that Triple OT win was starting to show on this team. If they had been able to have Kevin Durant in this game, he would have helped a lot in the late going of this one. But K.D was not coming in to save the day.

Raptors as a group had done a nice job keeping Russell Wesbrook under control with 14 points and 7 assists . While Calderon was having a brilliant night with 15 assists and Andrea Bargnani already had his 1st double double of the season in the books after 3. It promoted me to ask on Twitter what was more shocking the Bargnani double double, or the game previous when the Raptors had 101 points after 3. Tonight reminded me of something Jack Armstrong said in his recent interview in the DNB. He said it was not making excuses for Andrea. but with Reggie Evans on the floor and some of the other guys on this roster the opportunities he has to get rebounds are vastly reduced. Now with no Reggie the rebound total for Bargnani has been on the rise. Bargnani mentioned the loss of Evans as the reason for his improvement in numbers in the post game scrum. He said that not just him, but everyone had to make a effort to make up for the loss of Reggie on the glass. Raptors would get the lead to 14 and it would slide to 9 late before the Raptors tromped on the gas petal and finished this off for the 111-99 win.

Post game I spoke with Demar DeRozan about the 3rd Quarter for him and the other Young Onez. Well to be more correct I slipped and said Young Gunz and corrected myself. I said that it was like an infomercial for the group and asked if they were feeding off each other. Got a smile and a bit of a laugh, not sure if it was for the Young Gunz slip or the infomercial line. Once that was over Demar had this to say about that.

Demar DeRozan: "Yeah, stuff like that you got feed off it. We were feeding off the crowd. Just having the opportunity to get on a run. We took advantage of it."

Jay Triano a couple games ago vs Atlanta was brutally honest saying his starting unit 1 through 5 had been beat. I asked if tonight was a flip of that script, as the starters played well outscoring the Thunder starters 72-56.

Triano "Possibly yeah, I would like to take back Sonny's turnovers in the first half. But he cleaned that up in the second half and had 8 points and just 1 turnover. Which was big. Amir played well, Andrea played well, I thought Demar was solid and Jose was good."

It was quite the turn around for the starting 5 in just a couple games. The Raptors have had back to back impressive wins after a horrible loss. When they had that bad loss to the Wizards they rolled off 4 wins. Now after a terrible loss to Atlanta they have made it 2 in a row. A re-match from opening night awaits on Sunday, and if the Raptors are starting to believe they can be a playoff team a win over the Knicks would be pretty important. Did I say playoffs? Long way off yet but the Raptors are ahead of last season record wise, and the only other thing different is the expectation levels. But this group seems to have faith in themselves, a lot more than anyone else did prior to this season. Watching the Cavs get demolished by the Heat was a clear sign the Raptors have a lot more talent on the Post Bosh Raptors in comparison to the Post James Cavs. While 8 and 11 is not cause for parades, it is a lot better than almost anyone expected. In an Eastern Conference of under achievers the Raptors are in the mix for now to compete for a playoff spot. Wins over OKC, Boston and Orlando only help the Raptors confidence grow.

DNB TGIF Preview- Raptors vs Thunder

I am heading down to the T-Dot to watch the team I cover take on the team I picked to win the NBA Finals. I am pretty sure not to many people have the OKC Thunder to win the NBA Title. Sure that many folks are shocked that Raptors if the playoffs started today Toronto would be in them. Thunder have showed they are more then just Kevin Durant. They have been getting wins without their franchise player. The biggest reason for that has been the play of Russell Westbrook who has taken his game to another level. The Raptors even with some injures this season have still kept fighting on most nights. Durant status for this one is up in the air. But even without him this Thunder team is no joke. Raptors have beaten some marquee opposition in the best 2 teams in the East in Orlando and Boston. Oklahoma City is now in that elite class of teams.

The Basics: OKC Thunder 13-6 (7-2 On The Road) Raptors 7-11(1-5 vs West)

When Last We Saw Them: The Raptors could do no wrong. We mention taking it to another level in the opening and the Raptors did that against Washington. 72 first half points was more than enough to secure a Raptor victory from there. Ed Davis impressed in his NBA debut and DeRozan got back on track and led the team in scoring with 20.

Key Match ups: Russell Westbrook is playing at an all-star level. Jose Calderon I will admit has improved but can he match-up with Westbrook on D? Doubtful it might be one of those nights where we see Weems take Westbrook and Bayless when he is in there. If K.D does not play this becomes the most important match-up in this game. Andrea Bargnani needs to take advantage of his match-up. The Thunder do not have a big that can hang with Bargs. But we need a full 48 from Andrea in this one. The other match-up to keep an eye on is Demar DeRozan taking on Thabo Sefolosha. Should be a good test for DeRozan to see if he can string together back to back efforts.

Our DNB Game Plan: Now as I have mentioned in terms of getting interviews in pre-game it can be hit or miss. But I am going to try to talk with Jerryd Bayless and Ed Davis pre-game. May even wander over to Thunder Locker room and see If I can get K.D's thoughts on Texas having some Canadian Content in the NCAA. Just like with the Raptors the game plan might not work but will try to execute it.

In Case you missed it: This is the first of what will be every Friday that Raptors are at home the DNB will be in the house covering games. Hence the TGIF Preview. Also Vince Carter Via Twitter says you fans here in Toronto boo much louder in comparison to Cleveland last night. Lebron James put the wood to his former club throwing down 38. In case you have been living under a rock the Miami Heat take their talents north on Feb 16th just after Valentine's Day for the first appearance of Chris Bosh in an opposing uniform. Also according to local papers in OKC Kevin Durant is expected to take morning shoot around and based on that they will determine his status for the Match-up tonight at the ACC.

Update on K.D Status 11:30am: Word is no K.D tonight which is bad news in the sense he is fun to watch. But does improve the Raptors chances at sneaking out a win.

"Behind Enemy Lines"

I have heard and read it all about tonight's game in Cleveland. There is a lot being said with it being the first time LeBron James has played the Cavaliers in a Miami uniform. Everything from 'LeBron James ripped this city's heart out in a TV tour' or 'I can't wait for him to feel some pain'. I understand the frustration at decisions these pro athletes make or how some carry themselves. However, I don't understand the time and negative energy spent on signs and other devices to express hatred. Now it is personal and no longer about basketball. The Cleveland Cavaliers and area police are preparing for an event not like any other this city has ever seen because of the hatred some feel towards one person and his team as a by-product of this hate. Sure, be upset he left Cleveland and be happy if the Cavaliers win tonight. But let's get back to what this beautiful game is all about - cheering for the love of basketball. The Toronto Raptors have four games this week: Oklahoma City Thunder, Indiana Pacers and 2 against New York. Let's dig in.

Friday, December 3 - Oklahoma City Thunder @ Toronto Raptors

• This is the first time these two teams have met this regular season.
• The Oklahoma City Thunder are coming off a triple overtime win over the New Jersey Nets, 123 -120.
• Kevin Durant, Cole Aldrich and Daequan Cook are on the Thunder's inactive list. Kevin Durant sat out last game because of a sprained knee and is day to day.
• The Oklahoma City Thunder sit at 13 and 6 so far.
• The last two times these two teams met during the 2009-2010 season, Andrea Bargnani put up an average of 15 points. Only when Chris Bosh wasn't in the line up did DeMar DeRozan put up more than 10 points against the Thunder.
• Key to Friday's game: the Raptors need to watch their transition game. Against a team like Oklahoma, you can't afford too many turnovers or the snowballing of little mistakes.

Sunday, December 5th - New York Knicks @ Toronto Raptors

• This will be the second and third time these two teams have met during the regular season.
• The Knicks won the last time they met the Raptors on October 27th, 2010, 98-93. Andrea Bargnani, Linas Kleiza were the top two scoring Raptors with 22 and 13 points respectively.
• The Knicks have won their last two games and are 10 and 9 so far.
• The Toronto Raptors need to watch NBA Rookie of the month, Knicks' Landry Fields. He ranks fourth among rookies in scoring and second in rebounding.
• The key to the next two match-ups with the Knicks: play solid team defense and own each rebound. Neither team has a perfect record so far and both are looking to be consistent and solid.

Monday, December 6th - Toronto Raptors @ Indiana Pacers

• This will be the first time these two teams have met this season.
• During the 2009-2010 regular season, the Pacers and Raptors met four times and split the wins. Andrea Bargnani was the most consistent scorer for the Raptors during these meetings, putting up 34 points in one game. Other Raptors like Jose Calderon and Sonny Weems were inconsistent against the Pacers but put up decent numbers.
• The Indiana Pacers are 9 and 8 on the season so far and are really no more successful than the Raptors. Monday's match-up could be anyone's game.
• Paul George, A.J Price and Lance Stephenson are on Indiana's inactive list.
• Key to this game: Watch Brandon Rush. He has been on fire with his hot hands as of late and if his supply of passing is cut off, that may be the key. Indiana has a few players who can be off on a good night if you force them to make shots.

Davis Debuts As Raptors Light Up The Wiz

First a little bad news before we get to all of the good news from the night's action at the ACC. Apparently the person that informed via my Twitter about Reggie Evans recovery time was on the money. They had said 6-8 weeks and after surgery today it was released during the game that Reggie Evans is indeed expected to be out 8 weeks. The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina. So not sure if Reggie Evans was in any condition to watch his team take on the Wiz, but if he was able to he would have had a big smile. The Raptors were also without Peja Stojakovic who missed his 2nd straight game with swelling in his knee. But the Raptors would have Ed Davis fresh off his shortened re-hab stint with the Erie Bayhawks. The lesson Ed Davis learned from that experience is, he never wants to go back to the D-League again. At least from his performance in his debut that may not be an issue.

1st Quarter

Andrea Bargnani got off to a sluggish start and Amir Johnson who got the start in place of Evans was injured himself in the very early moments of this one. Raptors were forced to call a time out with Wizards up 4-2 and looking like Amir might be lost. Ed Davis was at least planned to only play limited minutes in his debut. An Injury to Amir would have thrown that plan out the window. But after the time out Amir was able to keep going. Watching on was John Wall from the Wizards bench as he was expected to play but not to start. So Wall didn't get to do the Dougie in front of Toronto Hip Hop Star Drake who was in attendance. Based on how the Raptors played tonight we would like to encourage him to come to more games. After that 4-2 lead the Wizards were pretty much blitzed the rest of the evening. Well that is not exactly true Wizard did hang in the game in the early going. Ed Davis would check in and have an instant impact with and offensive board and a put back for his first 2 points of his NBA Career to tie the game at 19. Not long after Davis would have a block leading to score for himself on the other end. Raptors Rookie from last Year Demar DeRozan had a dunk that was 10 worthy in a dunk contest and worth 2 in the game. Couple of Barbosa baskets would help build a lead. Andrea Bargnani would check back in after getting an early hook. He would be a totally different player for the rest of the night. He dominated down the stretch and when the music stopped to end the first Raptors had a 34-25 lead. They were also shooting an insane percentage of like 62%.

2nd Quarter

Wall was very quiet and Wizards defence was non existent. While Bargnani was dominant coming off the bench. He along with Barbosa and some others build at 42-27 lead and were crushing the Wizards. Raptors refused to stop as a Barbosa bucket made it an 18 point lead. The Raptors it seemed could not be stopped on offence. Well maybe it was more the Wizards couldn't stop anyone. Maybe it was both. Regardless the Raptors point total kept climbing and climbing. If the Raptors offence was a stock you would be yelling sell as there was possible way it could be better. The highlight might have been a Calderon pass to DeRozan that he would drop off for Ed Davis for a huge slam. The lead would climb to 21 on a Weems highlight reel jam. Leaving you to wonder was this the Washington Wizards or the Washington Generals. When the tot board or make that scoreboard was done it was 72-52.

3rd Quarter

By the time it was done Raptor fans at the ACC had free Pizza enough said.

4th Quarter

Garbage time at the ACC. Wizards actually out scored the Raptors 56-55 in the second half. Raptors lost 109-94 in Washington with out Wall. In Toronto with Wall it was the Raptors winning 127-108.

Yeah that wasn't much of a second half summary was it? But honestly this game was over long before even half time. Raptors had 7 players in double figures including Davis in his debut with 11 points 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in his debut in 24 and change on the floor. Perhaps the best story of the night beyond Davis' debut was their rookie last season Demar DeRozan. Demar had not played well for a number of games but he had a team high 20 and looked solid with 6 boards and 3 dimes. I declare his hamstring healed and he looked the best he has in a long time.

Have Raptors finally found a point guard combination that works? Forderon and Jackeron both ultimately failed. But maybe Calderless works. Jose had 11 points 8 dimes with 2 steals and Bayless had 16 points and 5 dimes and 6 rebounds. All together we had 27 points 13 assists 9 rebounds and 2 steals. That is pretty good.

Andrea at times was dominate but only had 18 points but the big stat for him was 8 rebounds. We mentioned Bayless 16 off the bench and Barbosa had 16 as well. All totalled the bench had 56 points. Outscoring a Wizards bench that had just 44 that included normally a starter John Wall with 19. But that number was a not exactly as impressive as it looks like. A lot of Wall's points came long after this game was decided.

Raptors move on to play OKC on Friday and Dino Nation Blog will be in the house for this one. The Thunder needed triple OT to beat the Nets with K.D not in the line-up. Much like many fans wanted to see John Wall tonight at the ACC. I would love to see Kevin Durant, but if K.D doesn't play the odds for the Raptors chances to win go up a lot. Tonight was a good bounce back for a number of players and the team as whole. This was one of those winnable games and Wizards are now 0-9 on the road. But the Raptors got some revenge and played with some serious purpose on the way to that win.

We will get to tonight's match-up in a minute. But there is a much bigger story to talk about first. Richard Peddie, it was announced earlier this week is stepping down as CEO/President of MLSE as of December 31st 2011. That would be big news on it's own kind of. But the bigger news is according to The Toronto Star it seems The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is in talks with Rogers Communications to sell them a majority interest in MLSE. This would be a huge move giving them control of all the major sports teams in the Toronto market place. They of course already own the Blue Jays. What this will mean for the Raptors remains to be seen. The future of Bryan Colangelo? Will Rogers take control of broadcasts has they have with the Blue Jays? More games on Sportsnet 1 in our future? There are about a million questions on what this would mean. Obviously the Raptors are just part of the package and the real jewel in this deal in terms of Rogers would be control of the Leafs. If this happens the price take is said to be over a billion dollars (1.3 B number is The Star) and would be the largest transaction in North America sports history. Will this mean good things for the Raptors? Up until recently Rogers track record with the Blue Jays has been not that great. But when you look at the major sports teams it is the Blue Jays with brightest future currently. Aside from them being doomed to be in the AL East and that makes getting into the playoffs a lot tougher in comparison to the Leafs or Raptors.

Now on to your regularly scheduled preview of the Raptors and Wizards. John Wall is listed as day to day and the Raptors have already avoided him once, not that it helped much. Still John Wall is a pretty amazing kid on the floor and his story off the floor is just as amazing. Take a minute to read this article on Wall from the Washington Post. Warm fuzzy feelings about Wall aside the Raptors would rather see him in a suit than in a uniform. Who will be in uniform and ready to play is Raptors rookie Ed Davis. Bryan Colangelo admitted that Davis' time table was moved up based on the injury to Reggie Evans. Speaking of Reggie he had surgery on his injured foot this morning. All the best to Reggie for a speedy recovery. Based on Raptors play vs Atlanta he is needed. But will not return anytime soon.

The Basics: Washington 5-11(Winless in 8 Road Games this season) Raptors 6-11(5-5 in Last 10)

When Last We Saw Them: The Raptors had their worst effort since a road loss to the Wizards. Josh Smith had a triple double and the Raptors had no answers and this game was never really close. Jay Triano said that each of his starters were out played by their counterpart on the Hawks and he was 100% correct.

Key Match Ups: Andre Blatche is a handful and he provides blocks, rebounds and hustle for this Wizards team. Who will match-up against him is kind of unclear. The Raptors started Joey Dorsey in place of Reggie Evans with not exactly great results. Amir Johnson had his issues with staying on the floor against the Hawks because of foul trouble. I highly doubt Ed Davis would start in his first game? But 1 or all of those 3 must find a way to deal with Blatche. Javale McGee should have his hands full with Andrea Bargnani. That is if Andrea shows up for 48 minutes. He didn't vs Atlanta after a decent first half he disappeared with only 2 points in the 2nd half. Demar DeRozan has been in a funk and battling a hamstring issue and he will have his hands full with Gilbert Arenas. If John Wall is not in the line-up that will give Arenas a lot more touches and shots(with a basketball) vs the Raptors. DeRozan needs to step up his game and with no games since Sunday you would think that Hamstring has to be feeling better.

Ok 2 things. We do like The Toronto Star, Doug Smith too. He has been doing this from Day 1 and I respect that. Second, I promise, I will shave for this. When that video was shot I just got off the air in Montreal at 7am on a Saturday Morning.

But honestly,when I first saw this my first thought was we have a winner. It really matched the spirit of what we were looking for. So congratulation to Chi-Hung Ta who I know better as Chi of Steel. This really was a great tribute to the blog and you can tell a lot of time went into it.

This has been a lot of fun and I am doing my best to make this a great event for our winners. I try to go that extra mile in everything we do with the DNB attached to it.
