Starting 5 With Matt Devlin From Denver

Today in the Starting 5 we catch up with Matt Devlin on the road with the Raptors in Denver, after some extra work last night in calling a double OT win for the Dinos in Utah. We start with conversation on that game and the unfortunate injury to Andrea Bargnani. Also look back a bit at the win in Phoenix. We also talk about the major step up Bargnani has made on the floor and Matt says who he thinks deserves the credit for it. In addition thoughts on the struggles of Ed Davis, Amir Johnson and Demar DeRozan. We also get into some discussion as well about James Johnson. Matt shares his thoughts on how Johnson reminds him of a player he covered prior to coming to Toronto still playing in the league today. All this and some talk of Jack Armstrong and Tebowing in Denver. It is a informative and hopefully fun conversation for your listening pleasure. We also make reference to Matt's road segment that appears on Raptors.com "Life on the 2nd Bus". Matt references the latest episode so I wanted to give you folks a link to it. Someone apparently Tebow's in it given the fact the Raptors are in Denver. As for the picture that comes from the Raptor press room from a game I covered last season. You might remember it as with Matt's blessing I posted it on Twitter. So with out further adieu here is the latest episode of The Starting 5.

Thanks to Matt for making time for us. Matt has been kind enough to be a guest with us since his arrival in Toronto and we always enjoy having him as a guest. This maybe a back to back for us in The Starting 5 as well as we are attempting to get another guest lined up for tomorrow. So keep you ears and eyes ready. I will try and make mention of it on Twitter if it comes together. We look forward to talking with Matt again and appreciate him taking the time after a long night of work to be on with us today.

Starting 5 Season Wrap with Matt Devlin

It is always a good time to catch up with Matt Devlin and talk some basketball. After the Raptor season was done he hit the road for the playoffs with TNT. So it took awhile to catch up with him but we finally have on NBA Draft Lottery Day. Some thoughts on the Raptors of course. Does Matt think he will see Andrea Bargnani next season in a Raptor uniform. Does he believe this team can play defence with both Jose and Andrea on the floor? Do I have any lucky charms? It is a magically delicious addition of the starting 5. Well maybe not but there is a lot of info and talk of the playoffs sprinkled in throughout. Thoughts on Mavs and the impact Tyson Chandler has had with them instead of here in Toronto as was the plan for the Raptors last off-season. Thoughts on the Raptors last two picks in Demar DeRozan and Ed Davis this and a lot more as we sit down and talk with Matt Devlin. Including an explanation as to why we have that picture of Matt from this season in the Raptors press room. It is always fun to have the play by play voice of the Raptors pay us a visit and always nice to see him to his thing with the folks at TNT for the playoffs. Not as nice as seeing him doing some Raptor Playoff games though.

In case you missed the big news of the Day B.C is back and has 2 year extension with an option for a 3rd year. Scott Carefoot has the news in Raptor Blog on The Score. Our Conversation with Matt happened just prior to this news breaking unfortunately. But we did discuss the future of both B.C and Jay in this interview. Life is timing and sometimes it is good and sometimes it is bad. It can also be about luck will see how the Raptors luck is tonight. Thanks to Matt for stopping by to talk with us.

A Christmas Visit From Matt Devlin

Matt Devlin joins us just a few days before Christmas to talk a bunch of things. We start of talking Christmas Shopping and then talk about the Jack Armstrong and Eric Smith CD from Brooklyn to Toronto. Which you can purchase tonight if you track down Eric at the game for just 5 dollars which goes to The Team Up Foundation. You can also get it online if you are not in the Toronto area go to Eric's Blog "The Rap" for details on how you do that. Even get into he and Jack and their Bon Jovi singing that has been a big hit at the ACC this year. But we do get down to basketball as well, with thoughts on tonight's game vs the Pistons. As well as some thoughts on the Young Onez, Andrea Bragnani, Ed Davis and others. Even a little talk about players playing internationally and if that becomes another issue to solve in the CBA. It is a good talk with Matt and hope you enjoy. In getting to more games this year get a chance to get to see Matt more often but have to remind myself to get him and all other regular guests in here more for you folks.

It is always nice to catch up with Matt and as I said at the end of the interview all the best to him and his family. All the best to all of our regular guests and their families in this holiday season. We will have one or maybe two Christmas surprises for you tomorrow so please when you have a couple minutes in this busy time of the year come check those out. One more game to re-cap as well tonight vs the Pistons.

Matt Devlin From Vancouver

I had not missed covering training camp till this Sunday. When the Raptors were having their scrimmage and I was covering the NFL for The Score. However, if I can not be at camp, thankfully we at the Dino Nation Blog know a few people that are at camp. One of those is Matt Devlin and he checks in with us from Vancouver. He will be calling the Raptors pre-season opener tonight on TSN as they take on the Suns. We talk about a bunch of things including that game tonight. We also talk about how the Raptors can build on it's fan base outside of Toronto. Along with talk of all the usual suspects you would suspect, mixed in with a little fun as always with Matt Devlin.

Thanks to Matt for his time and make sure you tune in to watch him and Jack Armstrong with the call of Suns and Raptors for TSN.

Starting 5 with TNT and Raptors Broadcaster Matt Devlin

Matt Devlin made the playoffs even if the Raptors didn't. He worked for TNT and covered the post season for the first 2 rounds for them. We talk about the playoffs some. But we also talk about free agency and Bosh, James and Wade. In addition some conversation on the future of the Raptors "Young Guns". Matt offers his takes on all of these topics and his surprises from the post season. It is always great talking with Matt and we have a lot of fun. Matt now gets to enjoy some time with his family after the long grind of another NBA season. That being said it could be a long and busy off-season for all as this free agency season and draft before that plays out. Matt comments on the challenge that lies ahead for Bryan Colangelo. It was a very interesting conversation and it has always been fun talking with Matt for the past 2 years with him. He did a great job for TNT in the playoffs and that speaks to how respected he is beyond Toronto. So have a listen as Matt and myself talk some ball.

Thanks as always to Matt for his time and as we mentioned at the end the Raptors draft future will be decided along with the other non-playoff teams tomorrow night with the New Jersey Nets with the best odds of winning. John Wall, Evan Turner and DeMarcus Cousins are the top 3 prospects for a lot of folks.

Matt Devlin Is Our Guest In The Starting 5

I don't keep records on this kind of thing, but if he is not 1st he is close to at as are most frequent guest in The Starting 5. Matt Devlin the play by play voice of the Raptors once again pays us a visit and talks about all that is going on with the Raptors. We talk about the whole Hedo mess and how does it get fixed with this fan base. The rise of Sonny Weems to the point he is now a part of the Raptors Starting 5. Along with how his buddy Demar DeRozan has handled life coming off the bench. We also re-visit the Chris Bosh 2010 discussion and if there is any clear idea to determine if Chris will stay or go. In addition some thoughts on how this team looks as they try to secure a playoff position and what they would face should they get there. Matt recently talked with Demar DeRozan so look for that interview on Raptors.com soon. It was great talking with Matt and hope you enjoy this lengthy chat about the state of things with the Raptors.

Interesting to hear Matt's thoughts and as he mentioned I will be down at the ACC covering the Raptors and Warriors game. I also will be liveblogging the Raptors and Sixers game on Saturday afternoon for the The Score. Following the Raptors on their road to trying to secure a playoff spot, with 2 games the Raptors have to win against teams that they recently have dropped games too. Can't have that happen again if Raptors hope to secure a playoff spot. Great to hear from Matt and hopefully this team will make the post season, and Matt will get a chance to call his first Raptors playoff game. Safe to say the Raptors will draw a tough assignment regardless of where they finish should they make the playoffs. Which looks good with just 8 games to go and holding the tiebreaker over Chicago and a 2 game lead in the standings.

Starting 5 From Indy With Matt Devlin

These are the times when having this man's job is pretty good. The Toronto Raptors are hot and this guy gets to tell you all about it on the T.V. Matt Devlin the play by play voice of your Raptors on T.V joins me from Indy as the Raps get set to face the Pacers in the back half of a back to back coming off a 117-102 win. Matt never fails to come through when called into our starting 5. He is a regular in this feature and I am happy and proud to say that. Today we chat about the improved play of Antonie Wright. The Young guns get a lot of love. In addition thoughts on Bargnani, Bosh and the point guard situation or lack of 1 with the Raptors. No drama all love and happy times in Raptor land of late. Matt also weighs in with his thoughts on some of the heavy hitters needing to make moves? As well as what if anything your Raptors might do at the trade deadline.

If you did not here no Hedo tonight hence the first question about Wright starting. Thanks to Matt for sharing his time with us. He never says no and is always a great guest to have in our mix here on the Dino Nation Blog as part of our Starting 5. Raptors and Indy tonight. Thanks as always to Matt.

Also I referred to the contest that I am in on Whotheman.com and I would appreciate your support with a vote on behalf. Here is a link to my battle in the Pros vs Joes contest. Sign up and vote for me. For anyone that takes the couple minutes to support me thank you I value and appreciate it. Part of why I work so hard is because of the great fans that support this team and this blog.

Starting 5 With Matt Devlin from Denver

Since coming to the Raptors last season Matt Devlin has been a frequent visitor to the Starting 5 on the Dino Nation Blog. Today we catch up with Matt in that thin air or Denver Colorado as he gets ready to call tonight's game between the Raptors and Nuggets. We talk a lot of things Raptors and even a little about the College Basketball Marathon they have broadcasting on ESPN. If Jack Armstrong looks a little tired tonight listen to this interview and you will no why. We break down the match-up and Matt gives his keys to the Raptors escaping Denver with dare we say it but a win. Also some talk about the point guards both Jose Calderon and Jarrett Jack. A little Amir Johnson love is dished out as well. Along with some thoughts on Demar Derozan and Chris Bosh. As well as thoughts on the Nuggets two main weapons in Chancey Billups and Carmelo Anthony. Should the Raps look to make a change and have Demar DeRozan come off the bench? Should the 2 point guard look go for good? Questions I heard fans raising that I got Matt's take on as well. There is a bit of a gremlin that makes some unwanted noise(Around the 7 minute mark). Did my best to make it go away. But did not want to cut it out entirely. The noise is only in my questions not in Matt's answers so it should not impact on things to bad. Just wanted to give you folks the heads up. Maybe the this thin air effects cell phones...I have no idea.

Always a pleasure to have Matt pay us a visit and when we enter Year 3 of the Dino Nation Blog (November 27th) I am sure we will enjoy many more visits with Matt. Thanks for his time as always and we have another guest in the Starting 5 tomorrow making I believe his second appearance in the DNB. Who is it? Come back tomorrow and find out along with a recap of this game in Denver.

Starting 5 With Matt Devlin On Pre-Season

It was been just over a year that Matt Devlin has been with the Toronto Raptors. I am happy to say he has been a guest with us here at the Dino Nation Blog almost from day one. I do not keep stats on it but I think Matt is one of our most frequent guests. In our conversation we talk about Sonny Weems and his quick rise in the pre-season. In addition we talk about the development of Raptors first round pick. Demar DeRozan. Some thoughts on Amir Johnson, Marco Belinelli, Reggie Evans and the questions about Calderon's defense. In addition some thoughts on Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu as well. We also talk about Matt joining up with Twitter which had been something we have been pushing Matt to get on. He now is on there @RaptorsDevlin . It is always fun catching up with Matt. He was on route to pick up one of 3 boys from school and with the new laws for cellphones it was done on speaker phone so there are a few minor audio issues. Hopefully nothing that ruins your enjoyment of our interview.

Matt has done a special with Jay Triano the Raptors head coach that was taped in his home town of Niagara Falls which you can catch on Raps T.V on October 23rd. Matt assures me it is well worth watching and I have seem a few of the previews and I would agree. Raps-T.V also did an inside look at training camp up in Ottawa where both Matt and I were in attendance. I am not in the Raps-T.V stuff but I am sure Matt might be. It looks interesting and you can go to Raptors.com and get a sneak peak at that. Matt did not know the date that will air just yet but safe to say it will be on Raps-TV prior to the season starting at the end of the month. Thanks to Matt for doing this interview. He is always willing to come on and talk with us and it is greatly appreciated by me. He also was true to his word in the interview and did tweet that he talked with me today. Good stuff as the Raptors have a strong presence on Twitter.

A man who is not on Twitter but we still love him anyway is our guest tomorrow. The one and only Jack Armstrong will be paying a visit to the Dino Nation Blog after his radio show The Game Plan that he now hosts with Eric Smith on the Fan 590. Always great talking with the coach. Look for that in the evening hours tomorrow. Great to be back after a crazy weekend of sports working for The Score. I did see the Raps and Wiz but at this point doing a recap at this point seemed pointless. Although kudos to Demar who looked good and as mentioned in the interview with Matt that dunk in the 4th was off the hook. Do kids still say that?

Matt Devlin is in The Starting 5

At this time last year Matt Devlin was in China covering the Olympics. It has been just over a year since Matt became the play by play voice of the Toronto Raptors. The team that he first signed on to cover has had quite the make over. Just 3 of the players who's names he called on opening night in Philly last year remain on this Raptors basketball team. He has in that year been a guest in the Dino Nation Blog on many occasions. I had Matt come on after he called his first ever game in the pre-season and many other times. He is always willing to come on and share his thoughts and have some fun with me. Today was no exception as we talk about many different subjects. Including Jay Triano and what all these changes mean for him. The job Bryan Colangelo has done in this off season. He gives his take on where this Raptors team fits into the mix in the Eastern Conference. Along with thoughts on the most recent trade. At least, the most recent one at the time of the interview. The way Bryan Colangelo is going you can never be sure. We even talk Twitter. Matt was on a cell so there is a bit of audio issues with that. But hopefully it does not take away from your enjoyment of the interview. But cellular technology is not perfect.

Thanks to Matt as always for making time for us here at the Dino Nation Blog. I do not keep stats on this sort of thing but Matt has been one of our most frequent visitors to the Dino Nation Blog and it is greatly appreciated by me. It has been a pleasure to get to know him in some small way over the past year. He is always very easy going and willing to take the time out for me.

So hope you enjoyed it, and don't forget DNB Radio is on the air over the internet on Blog Talk Radio at it's new and improved time of 10pm EDT. Hope you tune into to listen as I will have some thoughts on this interview and a couple others I have done recently. That along with thoughts on the Raptors and NBA along with maybe even some calls from you folks as well. I have another interview scheduled for today and if all goes well that you can look for tomorrow here on the Dino Nation Blog. I may have time to get a clip of it and give you a sneak preview of it tonight on DNB Radio.

Matt Devlin Post Draft In The Starting 5

It is just days away from Matt Devlin's 1st year with the Toronto Raptors. I have had the great pleasure to have him as a guest many times over that year. He is always willing to come on and talk with me here at the Dino Nation Blog and I am always happy to have him. I was hard at work on the Score.com and Matt was working just as hard at the ACC covering last night's NBA Draft. We talk about the newest Raptor Demar DeRozan selected at # 9 last night in NYC. We also talk about all the trades that went down in the last 48 hours or so. Along with some thoughts on Chris Bosh and Shawn Marion and their future with the Raptors. Matt Devlin was on route to the ACC for the Demar DeRozan press conference so he was on a cell so there is the odd issue audio wise. But it should not take away with your enjoyment of this interview hopefully. So with that said here is yours truly along with the T.V play by play voice of the Raptors Matt Devlin.

It is always great talking with Matt. I am not sure if I agree with him on the V.C Trade to Orlando. Here is my take on that over at The Hoop Doctors Website . Also as I am watching the press conference with Demar while posting this the talk of comparisons to Vince Carter were down played by both Colangelo and DeRozan. Demar also had much love to say about the city of Toronto really shooting down the stories that he may not have been happy coming here that surfaced in the build up to the draft. He also shot these down when he came to workout in Toronto. In closing I want to thank Matt once again and be probably the first to wish him a happy anniversary with the Raptors. He is always a welcome guest here at Dino Nation Blog.

Matt Devlin Talking Raptors (Part 2 of 2)

Matt Devlin chatted with the Dino Nation Blog on Friday. We had a great conversation going on some NBA topics but in having Matt visit we needed to talk some Raptor ball as well with him. His take on the new coach Jay Triano, Chris Bosh and the outlook for his Future, Jose and others playing internationally and we even have some fun trying to convince Matt to hop on Twitter with the rest of the world. Matt took some much time talking to us he had to bail at the end to pick up the kids as school. He always really generous with his time and I on behalf of Dino Nation Blog and thankful for that. So here is our talk on the Raps enjoy.

So Thanks again to Matt for his time and we will check in with him through the summer months as this Raptor roster begins to take shape for the 09/10 season.

Matt Devlin Talk Playoffs and Draft (Part 1 of 2)

Matt Devlin has been a busy guy since the end of the Raptors season just about a month ago. He has been working on TNT Broadcasting the Playoffs. I was able to catch up with Matt and we had a good conversation on the NBA and the Raptors. But in this first part we focus on the NBA and in Part 2 that I will be posting later we talk about the Raptors. But Matt had a chance to cover both the Magic who surprised the Cavs in game 1 along with the Nuggets who just tied up the Western Conference Finals heading back to Denver. We also chat about Shaq as a broadcaster and some thoughts on the top of the NBA Draft board with Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio being discussed.

I will post part 2 on Monday or over the weekend in that we talk Triano, Bosh, Calderon and players that play internationally. Along with that we explore one of the most up in the air free agent periods in the history of the NBA. We even talk about Twitter and if Matt is going to jump in on the latest craze sweeping the Internet and the NBA.

Matt Devlin On The Raptors and March Madness

Matt Devlin the Raptors play by play man drops by the Dino Nation Blog today. He talks with us about March Madness and the Raptors of course. Matt will be in attendance at the Raptors Red Party tonight in Toronto with all the proceeds of that event going to the Raptors Foundation. It is an annual event that sees the entire team come out and interact with the fans. In what has been a really tough season I think all folks connected with the Raptors could use a night to forget about things for one night for a good cause. Raptors foundation is for the most part a charitable organization that focus is children. Here is our conversation with Matt.

If you happen to be at the event and have some photos from the event and would not mind sharing them with the Dino Nation Blog, I would be happy to use them in the blog. Don't forget about our Madness pool on The Score. Sign up for the Score Bracket Buster contest and join our group.

Finallly...Chuck Swirsky Returns To Toronto!!!

No one will ever confuse Chuck Swirsky with The Rock. But he was a rock star of sorts for a lot of Raptor Fans. When you work in the media you get a chance to meet a lot of people. But I can say that Chuck was truly on of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking with. I have told the story before in the blog so I will just give a short version of it this time around. When I was in College, working on a small sports talk show. I did basketball as part of that show. Those little animated movies I have been doing are named after the segment. I really wanted to do a good job covering basketball. So I took a shot in the dark and e-mailed Chuck. I explained that I was wondering if he would consider doing a interview for the show once in awhile. Not only did he answer he was all for it. He would be a guest many times. Not only that he would help me make contacts and be very helpful to me. All from an e-mail. He did not know me and all he knew is that I loved basketball and the Raptors. I really was grateful for all he did.

The Blog never really got rolling to the point that I thought about inviting Chuck to be in it. Also with his own blog I was not sure if he would come on and be in it. Knowing Chuck he likely would have. But for whatever reason he never was in the Dino Nation Blog till now. Everyone was stunned by him leaving. I remember Eric Smith expressing that he found out at same time as everyone else did. In fact I may have even scooped Eric as I read the story early in the morning when it was breaking. I honestly thought it was an internet rumour gone wrong or something. But it was true and on his Radio show an emotional Chuck said he was leaving the Raptors and taking a job in Chicago to work for the Bulls. Now the Bulls are coming into town to take on the Raptors for the first time this season.

I wrestled with the idea of if I should ask Chuck to come to the blog. I had reached out to his replacement Matt Devlin who has been a guest here many times. I really have enjoyed getting to know Matt and he is a fantastic guy. He has been very kind to me and I have been happy to get to know him and help you the readers get to know him. So I didn't know if it was right to interview Chuck. I did not want to be disloyal. But I thought back to the first conversation I had with Matt and he talked about how helpful Chuck was to him in making the transition to replacing Chuck. So I figured Matt would more understand. So it was just a case on if Chuck would be willing to do it. So I fired off an e-mail and in true Chuck fashion his response was fast as can be. Chuck is truly on of the fastest people to responding to e-mail in the world. It is remarkable. He was all for it and said whenever you want to do it just give him a call. That is the type of guy Chuck is. So I was calling Chicago and it was almost strange to hear his voice on the other end. It had been awhile. So I asked him a few questions and he was happy to answer them all. Here is are conversation in the Starting 5.

I also have wrote an article for the Industry Magazine that will be out in February and the topic is Toronto as a future host for the NBA All Star Weekend. Chuck is one of a number of people I asked to give their take on the impact that would have on Toronto. I will let you see what he had to say.

Chuck Swirsky- "I think it would be a spectacular event in Toronto, because the city is tremendous. I think it would showcase what the city is all about. I would encourage the NBA and every board of governor member to allow Toronto to host the event. The city would do a great job. I know that MLSE and Larry Tanenbaum has the point person behind this would roll out the red carpet. I would completely support it. I have supported it. I would do anything I could to provide the energy to make it happen to have the All Star Game there. I hope it can be worked out.”

Personally I have moved on. But that does not mean that I don't still remember Chuck and respect all that he did in his 10 years in Toronto. He did mention that he still is a Canadian which is something that will always make him part of this country. He no doubt had a huge impact on the country in his time here. As you can see is those comments and in the interview he still very much loves Canada even though he did leave. I wish him well and nothing but the best for him and his family. His leaving will always be a bit of a question for folks as to why. I respect that he said it was a family decision and am willing to respect that. I have made my own choices in life based on family and can totally understand. I have had my issues from a broadcast standpoint about Chuck. But never as a person he is first rate. Even those issues I may have as a broadcaster do not change the fact that he was and is very passionate about his job and what he does. May we all have that much passion for what we do both in life and in our personal lives. So I personally say welcome back Chuck.

Matt Devlin Part 2 From California

Before we get to the second half of my chat with Matt Devlin. Some thoughts on last night. The Raptors had chances to win that basketball game and did not make it happen. It was made painfully clear that this team needs more talent plain and simple. Chris Bosh and Jose Calderon both had excellent personal nights. Jermaine O'Neal was for the most part not able to play in this game with the flu. The team beyond that produced very little. Jay Triano was giving everyone a chance for the most part and no one was really answering the call. It was an extremely painful loss when you consider what lies ahead for this team in this 3 game homestand. Now on to what Matt Devlin had to say yesterday in our interview as it continued after the starting 5 audio portion.

In this conversation with Matt it was more along the lines of topics as opposed to individual questions. The first topic we got into was Andrea Bargnani. Jack Armstrong has been firm in sticking with Andrea and feeling he can be a productive player. I started this topic with Matt's general impressions of Andrea as of late (This Interview Was Conducted Prior To Last Night's Game )

Matt Devlin-" I think that over the last two games you have seen the flashes that we talked about. Number one he has scored in double figures in back to back games for the first time since November. That is certainly significant. Ultimately for Andrea it is up to him. Forget about the pressures, forget about everything. It is up to you, it is your 3rd year. While there has been coaching changes and position changes, he really just has to come to grips with things and let it go. I got to be me and just play. I think if he does that and tries to play free and easy that will really benefit him."

I went on to ask Matt if there is concern in moving Andrea because he may finally get it. There is also the fact that on another roster that Andrea could be able to play as a 4. Which has to been to me what Bargnani sees himself as in terms of a position.

Matt Devlin-" That is a good one, I don't know if you have an answer for that. That answer is for Andrea. I think one of the most difficult things to do is figure out why someone is struggling. Why are they doing this when it appears that they have the ability to do special things. How do you get inside Andrea's mind? You can ask him the questions but is that ultimately how he is really feeling? I don't know.

It is like one of the great unknowns in sports and in life. When gifted talent.... Jack and I talked about this... you are gifted and everyone knows you are gifted. There is another part to that and that is putting it altogether and that is part of the gift. Do you have the ability to put it altogether? That is an unknown right now when it comes to Andrea. Bargnani is in my opinion extraordinarily talented, he has the capabilities to do a lot. But can he do it I don't know."

It is the same type of situation with a guy like Joey Graham. However people expect more from Andrea based on where he was selected and perhaps they should. But that may be part of the problem as well that Andrea Bargnani will always be judged by that first overall selection. In a recent conversation with Paul Jones we had talked about the idea of a sports psychologist being on staff. It could benefit a number of the Raptors you would think with all that has gone on with this team as individuals and as a team. I asked Matt for his take on the idea.

Matt Devlin " This is the third organization I have been with and they have all the resources. Bryan Colangelo is first class at everything that he does. He has surrounded this team with the best of everything. If it is needed it is there.

Technically they do not have one on staff but they have the resources for that. There is technically no team in the league that has one on staff full time. But if they feel or a player feels they need something like that they get it. From my understanding with the people that I have spoken to that they have that ability. If anybody on the team want to go to someone that is there. Everybody now uses like these "life coaches". They will tell you to unleash the power with in. Those things are important for people to reach their potential for any player or in life. But I think it comes down to the individual themselves and do they want it. Do you want to be the best? Michael Jordan said he wanted to be the best and he was gifted and made himself the best. Kobe Bryant is gifted but still puts the time in on the floor. There is a lot of people that say they want to be but then they don't back it up. There is the odd person that is just truly talented and doesn't have to work that hard and take it for granted."

I can only speak for myself but if this losing keeps up I may need a psychologist. I mentioned to Matt that Jay Triano is a big believer in this kind of thing. It was mentioned in the interview with Paul Jones how he used that resource with Team Canada in 2000. The record has not been good for Jay Triano since taking over the team. However it seems the team is buying into what he is trying to but in place. I asked Matt to talk about Jay and how he thinks it is going with him and the players as far as their relationship and faith in him

Matt Devlin " I think all the players have reacted positively towards him. That is one of the things that I think everyone notices. He is somebody that has earned his stripes that has been around the organization. Players and people respect his opinion and his approach cause they see the amount of hard work he has put in. Those are important things. You have to have that and that is something that Jay has provided. So from an environment standpoint that has been a big bonus for the team.

From a philosophical standpoint everyone has already talked about what he has been attempting and trying to do. There are times in which those things are getting done. From the players perspective I think they all understand now what the approach is going to be game in and game out. That is extremely important. Jay has a respect of the players based upon his work with them, his scouting of other teams and the fact that he has put it his time. Those are important and they help build a positive environment to help build together as a team. This team is very close to putting some things together but unfortunately for them it has just be a very difficult schedule. They just have not had that break in the schedule to catch their breath. You also have to take advantage of chances like they had in Oklahoma City."

Golden State may fall in that same column of chances not taken advantage of. The other thing that has been an issue is getting Chris Bosh and Jermaine O'Neal firing at the same time. Last night was another example of that chemistry and the chance to build on it lost. I am not blaming O'Neal he gave it a try and looked every bit the part of a guy that was sick. But even when both have been healthy Bosh and O'Neal have had few nights where they both have been a force. I asked Matt for his thoughts on that relationship and if it was working on the floor?

Matt Devlin " They had it together the other night and that is important. But it just takes time obviously. I think that it is working but it just takes time. It is a lot easier said than done. When you look to the other night they played well together. But I think key now is they just need some help. In that game the other night the need Kapono to knock down some shots and that didn't happen. They combined for 46 points in that game what more can you want?"

But it just seems that those nights have not been the norm to me. There is still times where you see Bosh and O'Neal not on the same page where one will pass to the other and catch that person off guard. Small minor details that just have yet to come together.

Matt Devlin " I think there is some validity to that. They are still trying to find what works for both. I think both have a bit of different styles. That is just something that takes time to sort out. I know what your saying and it is not easy. You say that if one is able to get it how come the other can not. But when you look at the last game that is more representative with the exception of rebounds from O'Neal. That game was more representative of what you want to see, Bosh had 29 and J.O had 17, from shot distribution standpoint and getting to the line. "

But in that game against Portland the Raptors did not win. They have not been able to find a way to win over quality opposition this season. They have at times struggled even against lesser teams. But to be able to get on the type of run they are going to need to breath back life into their season they must find a way to beat the better teams. I asked Matt for his thoughts on how the Raptors can break through.

Matt Devlin " That is all part of the process. I remember Hubie Brown always talking about, one of the steps is being on the road with 4 minutes to go and being in the game. That is a huge step for a team in the process. For the Raptors they need to get there. The other thing and I have talked about this with a lot of people around the NBA. There is no natural progression. Just because you make it to the playoffs one year or the Eastern Conference Final or The Finals does not earn you the right to get back the next year. There are other teams out there looking to do that same exact thing."

Matt had said he was chatting with assistant coaches with Portland and they were saying how many losses it has taken for the Blazers just to get to where they are at in being considered a team in the playoff mix. But the difference with the Blazers and Raptors from my perspective is look at how young the Blazers are. The Raptors have a lot of established players. Bargnani would be the exception but everyone else beyond Roko and Nathan Jawai are experienced players. The Raptors took a risk to get better and to this point that risk has failed. One of the keys is that reforming of the Raptors was Jose Calderon. Fans had high expectations for Jose Calderon. A night like he had last night is what some were expecting from Jose on a more regular basis. He was talked about has the best point guard in the Eastern Conference. I asked Matt if Jose had not matched the expectations.

Matt Devlin " I'm trying to put this in perspective. I mean he is third in the NBA is Assists. From an expectation standpoint I don't know. It is a new role for him and you look at his number the are solid numbers. So I think that he has done a really good job. He has had two different coaches that want to do things differently so that chances how you approach the game. Also the understanding of who you need to get involved and when you need to get them involved. So I think he has done an excellent job. But I understand when people take a look at it and say that from a fan perspective that we want more. I think from a defensive standpoint people are always going to say that he may be a little bit limited. I think against Portland he did a excellent job and was taking some shots, his shooting percentages are down and his shots are up but yet he is still 3rd in the NBA in assists ."

But Jose was expected to be an Eastern Conference All-Star and a top point guard in the East. The guys on TNT have said that the expectations were to high for the Raptors. Kenny Smith even went as far as to say that Calderon was not good enough to be a starter in the league. I am not going that far myself. But I think people wanted more. I asked Matt about the fact that some folks saw Calderon as an all-star and it is not likely to happen.

Matt Devlin " Right, that will be up to the fans and the process of it. When you look in the East you have Rajon Rondo, Devin Harris and Jose. Also a guy like Jameer Nelson with the Magic. There is a core group of young guys that are pretty talented."

When you look at the seasons that a guys like Rajon Rondo and Devin Harris have had it is hard to say that Jose Calderon is better than ethier for me. I just would not be willing to say it and mean it. Matt does bring up Jameer Nelson as well who along with the Magic have gone highly without fanfare this season. Can Jay Triano bring some of what he brought to Steve Nash in his time with team Canada in 2000. Make Jose take a bit more of a risk taker approach at times. T.J Ford in the past was the guy who would take that chance in the past and sometimes it was great other times not. But Ford still managed to stay among the better players in assist to turnover ratio in the league. Can you change Jose at all to add some risk?

Matt Devlin " I think and recently had this conversation about Jose, that is just not who he is. I think from a system standpoint and the way he has been coached his entire career that is just not who he is. He is not a Steve Nash and honestly how many people in the history of the game have that. Very few from a point guard position winning back to back M.V.P's. There style of play is just completely opposite ends of the game. For Jose , will that eventually develop? I can say that through time because Jose really trusts jay and they are picking more spots to run that Jose will take that chance. But ultimately he has been taught to play the game a certain way and that is not to turn the basketball over. From a point guard perspective that is not a bad thing."

I have to admit last night Jose was one of the best players on the floor. But I can't help but think fans expected much more than what they have seen. The increased work load and lack of production from the back-up position has not helped matters as well. That is a wrap for Matt. I thank him as always for making time for the Dino Nation Blog. It is lots of fun to talk about the team when times are good. But when times are rough it can be rough to do it on those days. All the best in 2009 for Matt and I look forward to talking with him in the new year.

Matt Devlin From California In The Starting 5

As I had mentioned this morning I was going to be talking with Matt Devlin. I was able to catch up with him and here is the audio portion of our interview which we call here at Dino Nation Blog " The Starting 5 ". It never has been 5 minutes in it's history but it is always worth going into extra time for our guests. Matt talks about the Raptors long road trip. Some thoughts on the Warriors and Bryan Colangelo and if the Raptors are going to make a deal and when. Matt also offers a cool story at the end that I never knew about which was pretty cool.

Part two of the interview will be tomorrow and that will be in the written word form. So make sure to come back and check that out as we talk about J.O, Chris Bosh, Jay Triano and Jose Calderon.Tonight it will be Raptors Rewind of the game Matt will be calling on TSN with Jack Armstrong.

Matt Devlin Part 2

It has been a crazy week with all that has been going on. Tuesday I had Matt Devlin by to talk about the Magic vs Raptors. That was all in audio form. But as with all the Interviews there was a second part. There was a lot to do this week so I planned ahead and asked Matt a few questions that would still make sense a few days later. Matt is of course new to the Raptors and he has not been here for the rise and fall of Vince Carter. So having that fresh perspective I asked him if he understood why some Raptor Fans still hate Vince Carter and was it time to move on for fans?

Matt Devlin- "Listen, I understand why fans take exception to Vince. From a stand point of they feel burned by him. I understand why people feel a certain way towards him, and it is understandable. Should you move on? Well that is up to the individual who am i to say. I don't know from a specific standpoint, each individual has their own feelings about Vince and what he has said and what he has done. But I do know that a lot of people feel burned by it. If they feel that they got burned and they never want to cheer for Vince Carter, so be it. If the feel that time has passed enough that there o.k with Vince and moved on from it, so be it as well.

But from a fan perspective, that is what makes it fun, that whole love and hate relationship. That is what builds rivalries and that is what keeps people passionate about the game. There are guys that you want to see and guys that you don't want to see. There are guys that you want to see because you don't like them. That is part of every sport not just basketball."

Vince Carter or not this is a key point in time for the Toronto Raptors. The Eastern Conference is all bunched up. The Raptors have ideas of being an elite team in this conference so is now the time to make a move in the standings for the Raptors?

Matt Devlin- "Number one, you take a look at the Raptors and the majority of their games have been on road. Their first extended home stand starts on Friday(Today). You look at the next 6 games and 4 of those are at home and that is an opportunity. In fact it is 4 in a row at home starting with New Jersey so you do want to take advantage of that. I think everyone (in the NBA) looks at that. Everyone is looking at the moves they have made in the off-season and trying to figure out where they are at. Changes have been made in organizations and people are asking how good are they at this point. Do they need to make a move to improve. But there are always opportunities in the schedule to take advantage of in the season and move forward."

There has been lots of talk of if the Raptors will make a move. If they do will that include going over the tax threshold. What is Matt Devlin's take on what Bryan Colangelo will do?

Matt Devlin- I think the first thing is Bryan Colangelo wants to win. Not just win in the regular season, he wants to win in the playoffs, he wants to win it all. When you have that as your base or starting point, then you take a look at everything. If he feels there are opportunities out there that can get the team over the hump and win for a long period of time he is going to do it.

The other aspect of it is that Raptors have just started using this big three line-up. So I think you have to play it out and give it time. The other thing that you always have to remember when making deals...I mean I was getting a lot of e-mails, when things heated up about Al Harrington and Gerald Wallace and all the different trade possibilities. You always have to look at it from the stand point of what would the other team want that you have. That could be a player or a contract or a combination of both. So, are you willing to lose other assets that you have in order to get something in return. So you always need to be mindful of that when you are looking at a deal.

This is something I have always talked about. Trade Checkers do not have any common sense to them. Just because the math works out does not mean it makes sense. I talked with Matt about the guys who have been under the gun. The Raptors wing players. Jamario Moon, Jason Kapono and Anthony Parker. Matt had some things to say about all of them.

His thoughts on Jamario Moon- "Know who you are and consistency is the key at that position. I think Jamario Moon needs to be an energizer and he knows that. So, that he needs to provide consistent energy especially now that he is coming off the bench."

As an example of that he pointed back to Sunday's game vs the Bobcats- "He had 8 points and 5 rebounds with 4 assists and a couple of blocks in 19 minutes. That is perfect. The thing i liked best about what he did in that game was he only took one three pointer and got to the line five times."

His take on Jason Kapono( On topic of shot selection ) -" You look at his numbers from three point range and he has never been a volume shooter. He is not a guy that just shoot to take a shot. He takes shots with in the flow of the game. He is not going to force a shot. I have seen him play for a long time and I have never seen him take a forced shot unless it was in a late clock situation that he has no other option. He is going to work the ball and work it with in the system and work for open looks. He took 4 shoots from three on Sunday and I don't how many more you really would want him to take. There might be a game where he take more shots from 3-point range depending on the flow of the game. For whatever reason there are times in which he will he will only take like one or two shots and it has got to be more than that. But I think he is a guy that likes to work the offense and he is not going to force up a shot."

His thought on A.P(If age is catch up to him) - " He is 33 years of age and every night you are asking him to guard the best players in the game on a nightly basis. So if you get anything from him offensively I think it is a bonus, because he has to expend so much energy on the defensive side of things."

That does not answer to me why A.P has started shooting the ball so poorly. maybe that is a factor of getting a bit older as well. I am really not sure. He should have his most energy at the start of a game. Matt's point of guarding the best players in the game is valid. They are also for the most part a lot younger than A.P. But in the last game for the Raptors it was Parker getting hot later in the game and was a big factor in the Miami win. If Anthony can play well defensively that is how he helps the Raptors the most and is his primary role.

Matt has had a chance to get use to his new role here with the Raptors and I just asked him for his thought on how things were going for him in his new job. For his thoughts on how he has felt about his new job as the Raptors play by play man.

Matt Devlin-" Just a first class organization. I am amazed on a daily basis with level of the people that they have in the organization. As well as in the broadcasting department, because I have worked for two other organizations and at the league level with NBA-TV. I just think they have so many great things going for them. It is the same thing with the fan base. Were about 3 weeks into the season and haven't had many home games but the crowds have been fantastic. Sunday in Charlotte ( Where Matt Was Last Year ) there were only 8,000 people in the building. From my stand point (Toronto) is just a fantastic place to be. From the fans and their reception and the organization as a whole. Toronto as a city and an organization has just so many good thing going for it. From all aspects it has just been fantastic for me."

There has been an adjustment for a lot of folks to Matt. Some fans have really been enjoying him. Some fans still miss Chuck Swirsky. But I can only say based on my deals with Matt. He has always been willing to talk with me for the Dino Nation Blog. He has really wanted to reach out to the fans from the first time we had spoke. I think i mentioned this before but the first time we spoke he took a huge amount of time to get to know me personally and get my thoughts on Raptor fans and everything to do with the Raptors. It is not like I am an expert or anything. But I think he was aware that I had a good idea of the fan base from my unique perspective. He is a great person and is a much different style of broadcaster from Chuck. Some have enjoyed that and others not so much. That being said I have nothing but good things to say about Matt. He is a good person just as Chuck was and both care very much about the fan base. That is a great thing.

Some Thoughts From The Desk Of Dino Blogger

Last night on the show "Hoops" there was a couple things of note. Jack Armstrong was really stressing the idea of not only Chris Bosh staying in Toronto is 2010 but the idea of perhaps bringing in another star to play along with him. That player he was strongly suggesting was Dwyane Wade. There has been a lot of talk about this. Wade and Bosh do have the same agent and Wade in his post game comments made some suggestions he liked the direction that Bryan Colangelo was taking the Raptor Franchise. So let the rumours begin as 2010 talk seems to dominate the NBA conversation lately. I have said that it could all be a lot of hype for nothing but I can't fight a forest fire with a garden hose so if people are talking about it would be wrong not to mention it.

Matt Bonner on Team Canada?- We all remember the red rocket. He was a beloved character in Raptor history. He lives in Toronto in the off-season. He married a girl from Canada and the wedding was in the summer in Canada. He also has a Canadian grandfather. All of this is leading to the idea of Bonner playing for Canada internationally. In an interview last night he confirmed that this is something he wants to happen. So Canada may have a red rocket to play for them in the future. I would love to see it. Matt Bonner may not be a superstar and is just a role player. But he is a guy that just seemed to touch Raptor fans in a special way that few have.

Will V.C STILL SUCK? Yes the Nets roll into the A.C.C tonight and it will be interesting to see if Raptor Fans still have all of that "LOVE" for V.C. Some fans have been saying it is time to move on. I would agree in might be but not on nights like tonight. Vince Carter has showed in the past that the people in the A.C.C (that he once claimed was still his house) those fans get in his head. So I say bring the noise and bring the hate. Till Vince Carter can prove it doesn't matter I have no problem with fans going nuts. It is not like the case with Tracy McGrady because when the fans booed him he loved it and played better from it.

Back To Work For Dino Blogger.

I can now get back to work and get to doing what I am here to do. I have got so many offers of congratulations on this new venture with the score and I can not list you all but thanks so much. It is a great thrill for me and I think it will be great for the blog and it's readers. So with that said let's get back to work.

Welcome Back Jose

What a difference one player can make to a basketball team. Jose Calderon may not have been running at 100% last night. But whatever percentage it was, it was far better than what Will or Roko can provide. The Raptors were a turnover machine without Jose and it was very noticeable how much Jose means to this Raptor team. His stats last night were not eye popping or anything but what it meant for others and the team was. The health of Jose Calderon is always going to be a major factor for this roster. The amount of minutes he is having to play will make Raptor fans nervous. I share in that concern. But until Will Solomon or Roko Ukic prove they can be effective on a consistent basis. Sam Mitchell has a tough task in figuring out how to keep Jose and his minutes under control will be an issue. Jose did have a bit of a tweak to his ankle last night but played through it. Raptor fans love Jose for the most part he gives them a lot of reason to do so. I only wish he was a better defender but that can be said for a few folks on this roster.

J.O Is Getting On Track

This is the J.O that people were hoping for when the trade was made. Big rebounding nights and being a shot blocking force on the defensive end. He is scoring a little less than some folks may have expected. I was never really concerned about that. J.O was here to make the Raptors better defensively and to add some toughness and rebounding that was sorely lacking. He is starting to get use to play major minutes and getting use to playing consistently after a few season plagued with injures. It all takes time and that is something Raptor fans are not always willing to give. But I really think J.O has done about as good as you could hope for at this point. We always hear that Jermaine O'Neal is a 6 time all-star. That is fact, but that is also a few years ago and a we injuries ago. It will take time to build back to an all-star level and he may near get all the way back. But what is clear is that he seems motivated to give his best effort to do so. That is all Bryan Colangelo, Sam Mitchell and Raptor fans can ask.

No Trade...No How...Not Now

Many have floated the idea of trading Andrea Bargnani over the last season and a bit. I was among them at one point last season. That time has passed for me. Andrea Bargnani had one of the better nights of his NBA career last night. I have seen an overall change in him that makes me think he is worth keeping for the long run. The biggest thing about Andrea last year that was the concern for myself and others, was the lack of progression in his development. I don't think anyone can make that claim this year. He is showing signs of an improved post game, better defensive effort and an overall effort that is there consistently. To make a move with him at this point would be a mistake. He is showing the things you want to see and he is still very young and has a lot of room for growth. When Bryan Colangelo selected him it was based on that long term outlook. If Colangelo was looking to the short term Andrea Bargnani would not have been his pick. There is just nothing that would convince me that trading Andrea would not be something that people would look back on and regret down the line.

Just When I Was Ready To Give Up On A.P

I admit watching Anthony Parker last night when he was at 0-5 on the night I was like COME ON. Well he did just that and went off shooting at a level I had not seen for him in a long time. In my talks with folks they point to how hard it is for Anthony Parker to be guarding the toughest guy to stop on the floor on most nights. It takes a toll on a player to work that hard on the defensive end. That is why you see some star players take breaks on defense to save up some energy. But A.P is out there for his defense first. His shooting has suffered some times as a result. But if that is the case and it is about his defensive assignment. I do not understand that most times A.P is starting cold shooting. He should be at 100% or close to it at the start of the game right? It will be interesting to see if the Raptors will consider moving Anthony Parker at any point through out this season. His contract is done after this year and the summer had rumours of offers to return to Europe for A.P. I am not sure if the Raptors will move him but he could be a player that would have some interest for a team looking to add a player for the short term. But it is clear to me that no matter what Anthony Parker will likely not return after this season. He has been a good player for the Raptors in his time here but age and time are catching up to A.P. When your sister is the superstar of WNBA you are hard pressed to even be the best basketball player in the family.

Raptors Need To Learn To Play With A Lead

I don't know if it is just being the team from Canada or what. But the Raptors just can't seem to hold large leads. It has been something that has gone on in the history of this franchise. It is o.k to win a game by 20 or 30 I would be happy to write about that I really would. Far to many times the Raptors take big leads only to watch them melt away like snow in heat. Last night the Raptors lead by 17 and that lead was erased and it took a second wind from Toronto to pull out the win from Miami. This has to change and it is up to Sam Mitchell to make that happen. He tries to call time outs and stop things from getting out of hand. That is what most coaches would do. Phil Jackson was known for not doing that and letting the players figure it out. However Sam Mitchell does not have Kobe, Shaq or M.J on his roster. But maybe he should give it a shot and allow this team to figure it out for themselves without having him try to break the momentum with a good stress releasing time-out rant. One way or the other Raptors need learn how to be a front runner.

Some Final Thoughts

Tomorrow I will have the second part of my chat with Matt Devlin. We talk about the ex-raptor Vince Carter and a bunch of other topics. Raptors Give It Away In Orlando

Who is Will Solomon? Was he the guy that had a double double on Sunday, or is the guy we saw last night who was turning the ball over and getting burned by Jameer Nelson. The game last night was the type of thing I feared would happen on Sunday. Roko Ukic actually looked better than Will Solomon last night. It all leads back to a point I made just a couple days ago. Jose Calderon is the most important Raptor. Chris Bosh played out of his mind last night and it was still not a enough. The Raptors were just making to many mistakes and that were directly related to the play from the point guard position. So the bottom line of all of it is get well soon Jose your Raptors need you.

Sam Mitchell Under The Fans Fire

Raptor fans are very upset and that is understandable. All the same things that happen when the Raptors lose games are happening. Sam Mitchell is under fire again and taking heat. Sure Sam is responsible for his team but playing without Jose Calderon against a Magic team that was on a serious roll heading into this game is not something that coaching itself could have changed. It is the typical way things have been. The Raptors beat the Heat playing short handed and Sam gets little to no credit for that. But every lose is always laid at his feet. All I am saying is that if you are going to blame Sam for a lose that is fine. But you also need to be prepared to give him credit for a win. The one thing I have always respected about Sam is that he will not let his team or himself use any injury as an excuse for a loss.

Chris Bosh Is A Beast

In a game like that many players would have just gave up and letdown. There was another game to play the next night. Save some energy and move on to the next one. That is not the way that Chris Bosh thinks or plays. He goes hard and always has. That is the core difference from a Vince Carter and a Chris Bosh. That effort that burns inside of Bosh. It never did for Vince. I just respect how Chris Bosh just refuses to accept losing and will bust his butt and do all the he can to avoid it. If there is anyone still out there that does not think Chris Bosh is a franchise player, and part of the NBA elite level of stars, I don't know what to say. You just don't see what I am seeing. There are a lot of so called franchise players that I would pass on for Chris Bosh. His attitude and skill are just fantastic. He never settles and is always looking to expand his game and get better. He will be the best player ever in this franchise history and I am confident in saying that. As frustrated and angry as the fans get. I am willing to bet that Chris Bosh is even more disappointed and more frustrated. He gives everything he has to be a winner on a nightly basis and he is the first to point the finger at himself is he has an off night. Chris Bosh is having a great year personally but the thing that matters most to him is that his team is only 5-5. That is the way it should be.

Announcement Delay

I really want to say I am sorry that I was not able to make the announcement that was planned for last night. There were a few issues that needed to be looked after. These were nothing to do with me and not of my control. I feel like a kid who just got told Christmas is going to be a day later. O.K it may not be that bad. But this issues are being taken care of and everything should be ready to roll just a little later. I guess I could have just kept quiet and not mentioned a date but I wanted you all to share in the excitement leading up to this event. But you will already notice a few changes. We now have some ads and that is part of this announcement. It will all become clear and I will explain it all from my perspective and what I hope it will all mean for the blog.

Miami Been A Long Time

The Raptors will at least be well aware of tonight's opposition. They just played the Heat this past Sunday. Some things for the Raptors to be aware of. Shawn Marion was awful in Toronto and he should be better tonight at least you would hope so if you are a supporter of the Miami Heat. Also Dwyane Wade really was coming on near the end of that game. If not for getting a bit banged up he may have been able to lead an amazing comeback. Last but not least. Miami did not shoot the ball well from 3 point range. If the Raptors think it will happen again that would be a mistake. Perimeter defense is always a concern and the Raptors must respect the people that are shooters on this Heat team.

More Matt Tomorrow

It has been really busy with games going on and working on these other issues. But the rest of my conversation with Matt Devlin will be up for you enjoyment tomorrow. Vince Carter, Jason Kapono, Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon and a number of other things are covered in that part of the interview. So I look forward to bringing that to you tomorrow.

Raptors Rewind will be in effect tonight and hopeful there is a Jose Calderon return to talk about and A Raptor win. There is a real chance for the Raptors to make some ground in the standings if they take advantage of it. They will have their first major home stand of the season after tonight starting with the Nets on Friday.
